How to Actually Be Funny

How to Actually Be Funny - A Two-Day Sketch Writing Workshop on How Jokes Actually Work

A common adage repeated by comedy instructors is variations on "I cannot teach you how to be funny - I can only teach you the tools of comedy."

This workshop seeks to achieve the polar opposite of that. In this two-day sketch writing workshop, you’ll be given a crash course on the set of conceptual frameworks that fundamentally comprise the border between "a joke" and "a series of words you wrote down."

This class uses the lens of sketch writing to illustrate a larger point about comedy as a whole – the insights gained here can apply to improv, stand-up, and much more. By the end of the weekend, you’ll have an idea of what exactly makes something funny, how to trust yourself to employ that knowledge and make good jokes, and you might even end up with the beginnings of a brand-new sketch that you can be truly proud of.

PRE-REQUISITES:

  • Have taken a sketch class, or participated in a sketch show before.
