Blockbuster: The Improvised Movie

Learn how to bring the language, energy, and spectacle of the movies to the improv stage. In Blockbuster, performers explore how to recreate cinematic storytelling live using nothing more than an ensemble, an empty stage, and a little imagination.

Students will learn how to translate film techniques such as close-ups, wide shots, slow motion, cutaways, scene transitions, montage, and other cinematic edits into theatrical tools. We'll also explore movie genres, character archetypes, visual storytelling, special effects, and the basic structure of a compelling improvised narrative...from establishing the world and characters to introducing the unexpected “tilt,” raising the stakes, and building toward a satisfying resolution.

Along the way, performers will experiment with the fun bells and whistles of filmmaking, including trailers, movie posters, credits, and even the possibility of a sequel. By the end of the workshop, students will have the tools to transform an audience suggestion into a completely original improvised movie...created, directed, edited, and performed live onstage.
